Dhoni & Sangakkara |
The World Cup 2011 Final between India & Sri Lanka remained a dream match for both to win the next world cup for their country. India won the world cup after 28 years and the Indian Captain's match winning innings in the finals remains one of the magnificent knocks in the cricket history. It is a memorable match for every Indians. Before the match start, there was a confusion in toss. Sangakara recalled that incident in latest episode of 'Reminscence with Ash" with Ravichandran Ashwin.
Sangakkara said that,"The crowd was huge. It never happens in Sri Lanka. Once I had this at Eden Gardens when I could not talk to the first slip and then ofcourse at the Wankhade. I remember calling on the toss the Mahi wasn't sure and said did you call tail and I said no I called head."
"The match refree actually said I won the toss, Mahi said he did not. There was a little bit of confusion there and Mahi said let's have another toss of the coin and heads went up again. I am not sure whether it was luck that I won. I believe probably India might have batted if I had lost," said Sangakara.
When speaking about not able to win the world cup, Sangakkara said that,"Whether we win or lose, we have this equilibrium on how to take a win or loss. The smile hides a huge amount of sadness, of disappointment, of thinking of 20 million people back in Sri Lanka who had been waiting for this so lomg, since 1996. We had an opportunity in 2011, opportunity in 2007, then T20 opportunities in 2009 & 2012."
Sangakkara also mentioned that they missed Angelo Mathews due to an injury in the finals of 2011 World cup. He said that," But for 100 percent, if Mathews had been fir, I know for sure we would have gone for chase, I'm not sure whether the result would have changed. That balance of team that Mathews would given at seven really was a bonus." He also said that Mathews overs and his ability to bat and read situations was always a incredible bonus for the team.
