'Celebrating the 37 years of India's first World Cup (1983)'

Remembering and Celebrating the India's historic victory of 1983 World Cup on it's 37th year of anniversary.

The 1983 Cricket World Cup was held from June 9 to June 25, 1983 in England and Wales. Eight countries participated in the cricket World Cup tournament. The eight teams were divided into two groups, of four teams each. Each team played others in its group twice & the top 2 teams in each group were qualified for semi-finals. Team England, Pakistan, India & West Indies were qualified for the semi-finals of World Cup 1983. Each match consisted of 60 overs per innings and all were played in the traditional white dress with red ball. No matches were held at night time, they were all played during the day.

37th anniversary of India's World Cup

On June 25, 1983, exactly 37 years ago, the Indian cricket team won their first ever World Cup after beating the two times World Champion West Indies in the final at Lord's. Kapil Dev led the Indian cricket team to a memorable & a historic win for the country.

World Cup 1983 Final, India vs West Indies

The final of 1983 World Cup was played between India & West Indies at Lord's on June 25, 1983. It was the third consecutive & hat-trick final appearance for the powerful West Indies team. West Indies won the toss and elected to field first. Sunil Gavaskar & Krishnamachari Srikanth opened the innings for India. After Gavaskar caught for 2 runs, Srikanth & Amarnath had a good partnership. But soon Srikanth lost his wicket of aggressive 38 runs including 7 fours & a six. While India was nearing 100 runs, Amarnath also lost his wicket for 26 runs. India struggled and their score was 92/4. Indian captain Kapil Dev also lost his wicket after hitting 15 runs including 3 boundaries in 8 balls. Next batsman Kirti Azad lost his wicket for duck and India were 111/6. Sandeep Patil & the Indian team's last order helped the Indian team to score some more runs. At last India was all out for 183 in 54.4 overs.

In the view of winning hat-trick World Cup, West Indies started to chase 184 runs. West Indies were surprised at the beginning, as Indian bowler Sandhu clean bowled Gordon Greenidge for 1 run. Then Vivin Richards & Desmond Haynes had a partnership & West Indies crossed 50 runs. As soon as they crossed 50, Indian bowler Madan Lal surprised everyone by dismissing the wickets of both the batsman & West Indies fell to 57/3. West Indies struggled & wickets were falling. Madan Lal took his 3rd wicket & Indian captain Kapil Dev catches the wicket of West Indies' skipper Clive Lloyd and score of West Indies was 66/5. After that Malcolm Marshall tried to rescue the team with 43 runs of partnership. But Amarnath dismissed both of them & the defending champions fell to 124/8. And then soon, Kapil Dev took the wicket of Andy Roberts & Amarnath clean bowled Michael Holding dismissing West Indies for 140 in 52 overs, helping India to lift their maiden World Cup. India won the historic match by 43 runs & stunned the world by defending 183 runs. Amarnath was awarded Man of the Match for his all round performance in the final. 

After 37 years of Maiden World Cup for India, the Indian cricketers started celebrating 37 years of historic victory by tweeting their words of happiness in twitter.
