Initially, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 was scheduled to start from March 29. But due to the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, the BCCI have postponed the IPL later this year. BCCI is planning to host the IPL during September-October in empty stadiums. But without the fate decision on ICC T20I World Cup 2020, BCCI are not able to make the stable decision for IPL 2020. If T20I World Cup & Asia Cup held this year as per scheduled, then staging IPL this year will be difficult. If there is no postpone, Asia Cup will be held on from September in UAE or Sri Lanka & T20I World Cup will be held on from October. As Indian cricket team are touring Australia from December, they will be arriving Australia a 15 days before the Test series of India vs Australia starts. So, there will be no time to stage IPL this year. According to the decisions of ICC T20I World Cup & Asia Cup 2020, the schedule of IPL will be decided. It is not sure that IPL will not be held, it was just the prediction. There are also possibilities to stage IPL this year.

According to the PTI report, A major IPL shareholder came up with idea that to held the tournament entirely in Mumbai. Already Mumbai has over 31000 COVID-19 cases. If IPL decided to play only in Mumbai, then the management has to take every responsibility to make the surroundings sanitized for the safety of players & team members. The city also needs to be get better.

"It's at a very preliminary stage but if IPL happens in India and by October, situation is under control in Mumbai, there are four top-class floodlit grounds available in Mumbai. The logistics for BCCI, broadcasters (Star Sports), maintaining a bio-bubble, everything could be managed smoothly," another BCCI official told PTI.

"Obviously, everything depends on COVID-19 situation in Mumbai. But if there are no spectators allowed and a bio-bubble is created then Mumbai won't be a bad option," the official said.

Earlier weeks before, the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly also have said that,"The BCCI is working on all possible options to ensure that we are able to stage IPL this year, even of means playing the tournament in empty stadiums." BCCI will suffer to loss Rs. 4000 crores, if IPL does not held this year.
